Decorating Your Master Bedroom: Our Top Design Ideas
In your new home, the master bedroom can feel like a luxurious escape. With it's private ensuite bathroom and walk-in or large closet, you’ll feel like you’re stepping into a five-star hotel room.
Of course, builder design and layout alone won’t create the perfect space for you. You also have to think about the ways that you want to decorate your room. It can feel overwhelming if you don’t think your interior design skills are up to par, but our tips will help you get a good start.
Choose Your Colours
As part of the design process, you’ll get to select the colours you want on your bedroom walls and in the plush carpet underfoot at our DesignQ design centre. Many people like to select a neutral colour scheme so they can easily change the feel of the bedroom later by changing the bedspread and curtains. Other people like to stick with a bold colour.
You want the room to feel relaxing. Light blues and greens are popular colour choices, but a dark blue can give the room a stately feel. Oranges, yellows, and reds tend to feel too energizing, but if you choose muted versions of these colours, they can work. If you already have a bedspread or piece of artwork that you know you want to include in the master bedroom, take a picture of it along when colour shopping so you’re sure the colours you choose don’t clash.
Look at Different Bed Styles
The bed is the focal point of your master bedroom. Choose a bed that fits your space. At the very least, you need space on either side of the bed. A king-size bed might feel overbearing in certain rooms. If you’re buying a new mattress to go with your new home, don’t try to cut costs. You’ll spend a lot of time on your bed, so you want something high-quality.
Check out the different styles of bed frames as well. Platform styles are sleek and modern. They don’t require a box spring mattress, so they tend to be lower to the ground. Large bed frames, such as a wooden four-poster bed or a sleigh style frame look best in oversized rooms.
Create a Sitting Area
With a large master bedroom, you’ll be able to create a small sitting area. This might be a nice place to relax with a good book at the end of the day or have some private conversations with each other. Consider using a chaise lounge if you’re looking for a cozy space, or a bench by the window if you like to look out. Many people are even including sofas in the master bedroom.
Include Some Tasteful Storage
When making interior design decisions, it's important to think not only of style, but of function. You’ll probably keep most of your clothes in the walk-in closet, but you might want to have a dresser in the room for some things. If you do, consider purchasing one that matches the bed you buy. Furniture stores often sell them as a set.
Additional storage is nice for out-of-season items. Some bed frames come with drawers underneath, which is a convenient solution. Many benches also open to double as storage. Use these for extra blankets for winter.
If you want bookshelves in your room, a large floor-to-ceiling unit that covers the wall is a nice-looking option. Make sure it’s either built-in or securely fastened to the wall so you’re not worrying about it falling over.
Light Up the Room
Lighting choices to suit your lifestyle is an important piece of the puzzle. You might start with a bright overhead light. This type of lighting works well when you’re cleaning or getting ready to go out. Then, place matching lamps on the bedside tables. You’ll be able to light up your own side of the bed so you don’t disrupt your partner’s sleep. If your master bedroom includes a sitting area, you will probably want additional lighting there. Choose soft lights for the bedroom so you’ll feel relaxed when it’s time to go to bed.
Balance the Space
A well-designed room has balance. It’s fine to mix-and-match furniture items, but you don’t want the room to feel unbalanced. For instance, if one bedside table is heavy with many drawers while the other is a simple table, the energy of the room will feel off. Create a sense of symmetry around the bed and any other spaces you create.
Select the Perfect Art for the Walls
Hanging art on the walls helps make the room feel put-together. Choose either a single large piece that fills the wall or several smaller pieces that together cover a large area. Choose art that matches your furniture. If you have antiques, for instance, you might choose a landscape painting with an elaborate frame; if you have a modern look, you might want black-and-white photographs. The colours in your art should be reflected in other accent pieces, such as the bedspread.
The master bedroom is one of the most important rooms in the home. Take care when decorating so it becomes the relaxing oasis you always dreamed it would be.
